ABINGDON'S NEW RECTOR

In the very beginning of this search process, Bishop Jones, in meeting with the Vestry, had said that God had already chosen our new Rector and that it was up to us to find him.  We we have done just that.

At the Congregational Meeting held August 22, 2010, the Vestry announced that Abingdon Church has entered into a Letter of Agreement with the person who will be our new Rector effective October 1, 2010.   The Search Committee made a unanimous recommendation to the Vestry.  Literally hundreds of hours were spent in meetings, interviews and visits to arrive at their unanimous choice.  The Vestry conducted its own interviews and issued and finalized the call for Abingdon’s new Rector.   This has been a long process that has involved an unprecedented number of people – both at Abingdon and from the 70 candidates who submitted resumes.  The entire Vestry, and indeed the entire congregation, is excited by what our new rector brings to Abingdon.  He has shown that he possess all the Leadership, Preaching, Demeanor, Stewardship and Creativity traits we seek in a rector.

Abingdon's New Rector is Rev. Sven L. vanBaars.

Though we are going to miss Geoff Price, our brother and spiritual guide, he has prepared us well for this transition into the future.  Within the next few weeks, we will post Rev. vanBaars' bio.

Our Transition Priest

Abingdon Parish has been in a transition period since 2006.  During this time, we have been blessed with the services of the Rev. Dr. Geoffrey Masefield Price as our Priest and Interim Rector.  His down-to-earth demeanor and small-town vicar style, coupled with his liturgical skills and vast knowledge of theology and colonial church environments quickly endeared him to our entire church family.  He is a gifted speaker that easily describes biblical information in terms of the time it was written and in relation to the world as we know it today.

As we transition to a a future with a full-time rector, we will always remember the love, friendship, support, and spiritual guidance we have received from our friends Geoff and Kathleen Price.   The have become, and will always be, members of the Abingdon family.

Dr. Geoff Price was born in Youngstown, Ohio.  He is a former Eagle Scout (with Bronze & Gold Palms).  Reverend Price earned his Bachelor Degree from Youngstown State University, including an additional year of study at the University of London, Queen Mary College (U.K.).  He attended additional schooling at University of Michigan Medical Center, Sarum & Wells Theologican College (U.K.), and St. Georges College, Jerusalem, culminating in graduation at the Virginia Theological Seminary with a Masters Degree in Divinity in 1974.  After a few years of teaching and parish work, he earned his Doctorate in Ministry from the Virginia Theological Seminary in 1992.

Dr. Geoff Price is married to the Rev. Dr. Kathleen Vermillion Price, Rector of All Saints’ parish, Oakley, Md.  They maintain households in both Maryland and Williamsburg, Virginia.  They have three daughters, a son-in-law, and one granddaughter.
