Music

Over the years, Abingdon has enjoyed an exceptional music program consisting of volunteers and guest musicians. Music is an important part of the life of Abingdon with enthusiastic volunteer choir members and a beautiful, acoustically exceptional space in which to worship. In addition, Abingdon installed a magnificent 25-rank Walker tracker organ in 1989.
The Christmas and Easter seasons often bring in exceptional instrumentalists from the surrounding area as well as soloists and, occasionally, other choirs from as far away as England. During our 10:30 a.m. service, our Organist and Music Director, Alisa Bohon, leads the choirs in a program of classical choral music as well as selections from the contemporary and gospel genre.

During the summer months of June, July and August the choir does not sing.

If you would like more information about the music program, please contact the office at Abingdon Church at (804) 693-3035 or email music@abingdonchurch.org

Adult Choir

The Abingdon Adult Choir is a fully volunteer choir that is dedicated to the support of the 10:30 AM service through service music and anthem offerings. We enjoy a wide range of repertoire that includes Bach, Palestrina, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Faure, and other liturgical staples as well as contemporary and gospel. We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The choir is active in social group gatherings often after choir rehearsal and yearly end of the year celebrations.

Bell Choir

The Bell Choir rehearses weekly on Thursdays from 6:00-7:00 PM. They are a dedicated and lively group that enjoys being a part of the services bi-monthly.

Adult Choir

The Abingdon Adult Choir is the main provider and leader of music in the Abingdon worship service.  With membership exceeding twenty adult voices, the adult choir graces us with beautiful hymns and anthems at each Sunday 10:30 worship service from September through May. In addition, the choir provides special music for Christmas Eve, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Easter. Our primary literature is based on the classical repertoire from Renaissance to Contemporary.

Rehearsals are Thursday evenings, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m.

Children's Choir

The children's choir of Abingdon Church brings us music to the 10:30 am Sunday worship service several times throughout the year.  The choir ranges from grades 2-7.

Rehearsals are on Thursdays from 5:00-5:45 p.m. in the choir room of the Parish House. Following rehearsals the choir enjoys dinner together, along with their families, prepared by the parents or other parishioners.

Handbell Choir

The Abingdon Handbell Choir plays both a beautiful, three-octave set of Schulmerich handbells and three-octave set of chimes. The handbell choir prepares throughout the year for the 10:30 worship service and accompanies the choir at other festive services.  This group is open to anyone with a very basic grounding in reading music. Joining the handbell choir is a wonderful way to be a part of the music program of Abingdon.

Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
